Thinking Of Upgrading To One Of Those Modern Entertainment Centers?
When I was growing up in the 80’s modern entertainment centers were simple: we had a television. Eventually in the mid-80’s we got one of the first front-loading VCRs and then the customary pile of VHS tapes started piling up. That was all we needed, and they were pretty much the only options anyway. Back then, the TV stand was the modern entertainment center. If you were lucky there was space down the bottom to put the VCR and as many VHS tapes you could stuff into the remaining space, the rest usually found their way to the bottom of drawers.
These days and entertainment center is a major piece of furniture in any TV or family room. Modern entertainment centers now have to accommodate big-screen TVs, a collection of speakers, receivers, CD and DVD players, and usually a big ole collection of CDs and DVDs. You can’t get away with a glorified table on wheels anymore; nowadays you need some hefty equipment to hold all your electronic gear.
I have unfortunately experienced firsthand of not owning good modern entertainment centers. I had collected all my equipment over the period of about 1-2 years before I bought my corner entertainment center. At first I thought I could just stack all my gear on old tables and workbenches. My TV and DVD player sat on a sturdy table, with the VCR on top of the TV and speakers on either of the TV, hanging over the edge of the table by an inch or so each. By the time I’d added everything I had DVDs, CDs and old VHS tapes stacked on another shelf, my receiver sitting on another nearby table, and the surround sound system speakers set up all over the room to get the best sound. It was a complete mess. Without the help of modern entertainment centers, I was taking up the whole room.
With such a huge variety of gear available these days it makes it a little harder to find modern entertainment centers that are just right for your configuration of setup. You need to measure each component to make sure they each fit perfectly; otherwise your entertainment center will be an expensive failure. It’s true; most modern entertainment centers aren’t cheap. It took me months of looking and measuring multiple modern entertainment centers before I found one that was suitable and within my budget. I had so much equipment, and so much media, that it took me almost a week just to figure out the best way to arrange everything.
