Audio Visual Bunker

Having recently moved countries, I decided it was a good time to upgrade my mobile phone too. My old phone was a Sony Ericsson that I’d had for over two years. Over those two years I had built up a fair collection of photos and videos that I really wanted to keep. Back when I bought the phone, bluetooth enabled mobiles were still pretty expensive, so I decided not to get one. The only connectivity option for my phone was infrared.

In order to transfer all the old photos and videos from my phone to my laptop I bought one of those USB infrared adaptors, which was only about $20. It didn’t take very long, but it was kind of painful transferring 60+ items one-by-one. All the photos came through as jpeg’s and the videos were in 3gp format. I wanted to share a lot of them with my friends and family, but new that most of them would not know what a .3gp file was, or even how to open it.

This page explains what 3gp is and details three different (free) tools that you can use to convert your videos. I tried the 3gpToRawAvi converter at the bottom of the page, but didn’t have much luck getting it to work. Next I download the Freeware Zwei-Stein Video Editor, but had some problems with this too. Lastly I tried the Freeware Mobile 3GP converter - and this worked perfectly!

I converted all my videos in one batch using the Freeware Mobile 3GP converter. The AVI videos range in size from 2-20Mb, obviously depending on how long they are. I can’t spot any loss in quality whatsoever, which is great. Now I just need to compress them into mpeg videos and send them round to people.
